Hi, I’m Paul.

I’ve had a lifelong love of houseplants and I want to share some of my experience with you.

I hope you enjoy reading through some of my ideas and can use them with your own plants.

As well as raising plants at home, I’ve also set up and run a floristry business with my wife since 2003. This has involved installing and caring for plants in corporate settings.

Where it all started

My earliest memories go back to when I was about 11 years old and used to grow a range of different plants in my bedroom. These included Spider plants, tradescantia, Bizzy Lizzie and a cactus garden with a range of different cacti and succulents.

Looking back, I think my mum encouraged me to have these plants as they were easy to grow and to propagate. I loved being able to root new baby spider plants and get a new plant for free!

The mantlepiece over the fireplace in my bedroom always seemed to have small glasses of water, where I was rooting my Tradescantia or Bizzy Lizzie.

I also had great success growing flowering plants indoors. Black-eyed Susan was one example that I used to brighten up an unused fireplace in my room. I let my guinea pigs out of their cage one day to ‘stretch their legs’ and they took a liking to the Black-eyed Susan! I returned to my room just in time to see the last of the flowers in the mouth of Ethel, one of the guinea pigs. Luckily, no harm was done to the guinea pig.

Later years

I always loved biology at school and it was no surprise that when I went to University, I studied at the School of Biological Sciences in Nottingham. Naturally, I took a collection of plants with me at this time.

My wife still laughs about the time that I first moved in with her, as we set up home together. I had moved all my gear in a rented van and arrived outside.  When she opened the door, she was greeted by a young man holding his prize possession – a giant yucca plant!

Plants and business

Back in 2003 I set up a floristry business with my wife.  She’s a very talented, professionally trained florist. The business originally focussed on the corporate market which involved us creating beautiful plant and flower arrangements for hotels and businesses.

We later moved into the wedding market. This allowed us to hire out large plants to brides who wished to elegantly decorate their venues with real living botanicals.

Influences

One of the biggest influences on my love of indoor plants is my mum, who has always had a collection at home. In fact, my mother’s side of the family has always had an interest in plants and one specimen of Aspidistra (cast iron plant) that is still in the family belonged to my great, great grandmother!

I don’t have any children to pass on my love of indoor plants.  But hopefully through this website, I can inspire some people around the world to enjoy this fascinating hobby.
